Senior Citizens Center

The Senior Citizens Center at 710 Opportunity Drive in Columbia City is open Monday - Friday from 8:00AM to 4:00PM for various social activities, educational programs and recreational classes. Seniors are welcome to attend luncheons, bingo, arts and crafts, birthday parties, line dancing, card games, movies along with other enjoyable and informative programs. All Senior Center activities are open to persons age 60 or older unless otherwise stated. Please visit the monthly Event Calendar or call (260) 248-8944 for further details.

Nutrition Site

Meals are served to persons age 60 and above for $3.00. Reservations are required 24 to 48 hours in advance by calling 260-244-6068.

Senior Pack Program

The Senior Pack Program is available through the Community Harvest Food Bank in Fort Wayne. A sponsor donates $125 yearly to provide a 20-25 pound bag of groceries to be delivered every two weeks for a full year to a homebound senior citizen living on a limited income. Handicapped Equipment Loans

The Council on Aging has wheelchairs, walkers, canes, crutches, shower chairs, and commodes available for short-term loan - up to three (3) months per client. A $25 refundable deposit is asked to borrow a wheelchair. Please call the Senior Citizens Center at (260) 248-8944 or simply stop by to borrow such equipment.

The Senior Citizens Center is host to numerous educational and informative programs, special interest videos and seminars to seniors. Topics include:

WCCOA Tours

WCCOA offers a travel service suited for individuals planning day trips. For an updated list of current trips being offered through WCCOA Tours click this link. Currently available tours in chronological order include:

Public Transportation

The WCT operates 11 wheelchair equipped vans and a van that is not wheelchair equipped that provide affordable public transportation for residents of Whitley County. Operational hours are Monday - Friday from 7:00AM to 5:00PM, except during major holidays. To schedule a ride, please call (260) 248-8944 or 1-800-290-1697 from Churubusco. Scheduling requests should be made 24 to 48 hours in advance, and transportation fees will be collected by the driver. Non-Perishable Food Pantry

The Senior Citizens Center provides supplemental groceries once a month to support area seniors. All individuals wishing to receive donated goods must fill out a request application. The Food Pantry operates Monday, Tuesday and Thursday from 8:30 A.M. to 10:30 A.M. and from 1:00 to 2:00PM.

Health Programs

Health Care professionals provide scheduled health check-ups and shots at the Senior Citizens Center. Health checks include:

  • Foot Care - A nurse will soak and massage the client's feet, and trim nails and calluses. The client will need to bring a basin and towel. To make an appointment for foot care, contact the Senior Citizen Center at (260) 248-8944.
  • Flu Shots - A local health care provider will administer flu shots in the fall.
  • Blood Pressure Readings - The County Health Nurse will take blood pressure checks the 2nd Wednesday of every month from 10:00AM to 11:00AM.

There will be a charge for some of these services.

Information and Referral Services

The Whitley County Council on Aging/Senior Citizens Center cooperates with local, state, and federal social service agencies to give information to seniors so that they can obtain the benefits and services available to them. The Senior Citizens Center has access to information about legal aid, health care services, nursing homes, nursing home ombudsman, and adult protection services. Building Rental

The Woodlands building is available to be rented for receptions, reunions, showers, business meetings, and more. There is seating for up to 160 people, and an on-site kitchen facility. For more information or to make a reservation, call (260) 248-8944.

Homemaker Service

Homemakers are available to help senior citizens with house cleaning chores they are no longer able to do for themselves. These duties include:

  • Dusting
  • Vacuuming floors
  • Cleaning in the kitchen and bathroom
  • Laundering clothes
  • Changing linens
  • Washing windows
  • Removing trash
  • Grocery shopping

Homemakers may only perform cleaning services and not hands-on care. They may not do heavy cleaning, lifting or animal care. Also, the homemaker may not provide services to household members other than the client.

For Homemaker and Assistant to Homebound services, the client's needs will be evaluated by a Case Manager before services commence. For further information or referral, please call Aging & In-Home Services of Northeast Indiana at 1-800-552-3662.

Farm Wagon

The Community Harvest Farm Wagon comes to the Senior Citizens Center on the 1st, 3rd, and 5th Wednesdays of each month. Seniors wishing to receive these donated perishable goods can pick them up after bingo at approximately 10:00AM.

Senior Caller Newsletter

The Senior Citizens Center publishes a monthly newsletter that contains a schedule of current happenings for seniors in Whitley County. Articles of interest to seniors include:

The Senior Caller is available by mail for a yearly subscription of $7.00.

Tax Assistance (Seasonal)

A trained tax consultant is available from February through April to assist senior citizens with simple income tax filings free of charge. The tax consultant will set the dates and times of availability. Please contact the Senior Citizens Center at (260) 248-8944 to make your appointment.

Red Hat Society

The "Old Bats in Red Hats" chartered membership in 2006. You must be over age 50 to join. Activities include going out for lunch, pot lucks, holiday parties, and going to places of interest. There are more than 50 members. You pay as you go, there are no dues.
