About Us

Our History

The Whitley County Council on Aging was established in October of 1974 to enhance the quality of life for area senior citizens. By 1980, a transportation service and multi-purpose senior activity center were in operation thanks in part to funding from United Way of Whitley County and federal revenue sharing funds, together with grants from the State Commission on Aging and the Area Agency on Aging for renovation and equipment. Local donations and much needed volunteer labor also went a long way toward the completion of the project.

Whitley County Transit

In January of 2007 Whitley County Transit debuted its refurbished transport services to a wide range of local residents thanks in part to funding from the County and INDOT. Currently, Whitley County Transit operates 12 vans which are used to transport over 1,500 clients annually.

The Woodlands Senior Activity Center

The Woodlands opened its doors to the community in September 2008. The Whitley County Council on Aging was awarded the Community Focus Grant to match internal and local funding for the new building.

Volunteers

The volunteers at WCCOA have assisted in providing a variety of quality services to senior residents. Their duties at the Senior Activity Center include assisting with food donation initiatives by loading, unloading and delivering goods; clerical work; providing support with fundraising activities; assisting with the Nutrition Program, and various other service oriented tasks. The time these individuals give has been of great help to area seniors.
